Travel can often be a great time for thinking. ![]() It was a war waged between the United States and two opposing parties in. The Greeks definitely were a warm, friendly and extremely reassuring people to spend a holiday with, when accompanied by a wide-eyed little wonder. The war entailed millions of fatalities including some in the neighboring (non-participating) countries of Laos and Cambodia. About 50 of all the Greeks, old or young, male or female that passed us on the street, winked and waved to our little wonder. Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled. If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home. Yet a part of me still has this belief that since I am living the dream, I’m supposed to be happy and glad and appreciate my good fortune – all the time. The Vietnam War stretched out from 1955 to 1975. To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries. Where they expose their vulnerabilities and inadequacies where they talk about their failures and things that went wrong. I know this belief is foolish because when I read other people’s writing – whether about travel or something else – the writing that impacts me most is writing where the author shows that they are human. I’ve believed that since I’m living the dream, I shouldn’t be saying anything negative about our travels. Complaining would be ungrateful, not appreciating our good fortune. Yet when talking or writing about our travels, I’ve been reluctant to talk about the bad things. I love these quotes because they serve as a great reminder that adventure is also a matter of perspective and outlook.
